Dear Burnt Oranges Community,I hope this message finds you well. As the Chair of the Board for Burnt Oranges, Inc, I want to address a recent decision made by our board and some of the discussions that have followed within our community.Updates on Membership Program ChangesAs part of our commitment to the principles of inclusivity and equity, our board recently voted unanimously to discontinue the early ticket access membership program that was implemented by our previous leadership. This decision was guided by a thorough evaluation of the program’s alignment with the core values of the Burning Man community, particularly the principle of Decommodification. It became clear that the program afforded advantages based on financial means rather than engagement or contribution to our community, which contradicts our mission to be open and accessible to all.Responding to Community FeedbackWe are aware that the discontinuation of this program has sparked a variety of reactions, and I want to specifically address concerns about members feeling undervalued. It’s important to clarify that our community is not defined by memberships or financial contributions, but by active participation and mutual support. The essence of what we do is about creating an environment where everyone has equal opportunity to be involved, without financial barriers.Moving Forward TogetherWe understand that changes can lead to uncertainty, and we are here to listen and address any concerns you might have. Your voice is crucial as we navigate this transition. Here’s how we plan to move forward:–Enhanced Communication: We will keep you updated through every step of this transition. Our website is currently being updated, and we encourage you to keep an eye on it for the latest information.–Open Forums: We will be hosting virtual meetings where you can speak directly with board members, ask questions, and provide feedback. Details will be announced soon.–Volunteer and Participation Opportunities: We remain committed to fostering an inclusive environment. We will be introducing more ways for everyone to get involved, ensuring that our events reflect the collective spirit and creativity of our community.New Funding StrategiesIn light of discontinuing the membership program and the revenue it generated, we have developed a robust strategy to support our mission through alternative means. As a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we are eligible for various state and federal grants that support art and community initiatives. We are actively applying for these grants to not only fund our events but also to provide more substantial support to our community members.
This shift towards grant funding allows us to maintain and even expand our programs without relying on membership fees, ensuring that access to our events remains equitable and in line with our core values. We are excited about the potential to enhance our offerings and support through these opportunities.
Appreciating Your Patience As we continue to organize and strengthen our new board, we deeply appreciate your patience and understanding. The transition to a new governance structure is a significant effort, and your support during this period is invaluable. Keep an eye out for upcoming volunteer opportunities, as your involvement is crucial to the success of our initiatives.
