Hello Burnt Oranges community,
Welcome to 2024! Love Burn has passed, spring has arrived, and we’re setting our sites on AfterBurn 2024. As you have probably heard, that’s happening November 8, 2024 through November 10, 2024 at Camp La Llanada, with exodus on Monday, November 11, 2024. It feels like a long way away now, but you know how things can creep up.
We have a lot of important information for you, as follows:
Art Grants and Theme Camps: Open Now The most important aspect of any burn, along with community, is the art that all of you wonderful and creative folks bring to the event. We’re proud to announce that we are doubling the amount of art grants we’re awarding this year, which means you — yes, you! — should get inspired to apply here.
We’re also opening up theme camp applications, the other core component of any burn. If art is the heart, then theme camps are the soul. Whether you’re an AB OG or new to the community, we want to see your theme camp come to life! Register here.
New Website At long last, we have a new website! Rather then continue with two separate websites as we have previously, we’re consolidating them, so you can find everything you need here (once we have everything up and running). While we plan for that to be a one-stop shop, we also encourage you to join our active and growing Facebook page here. It’s a great way to build and maintain our community bonds, too!
Your New Board of Directors In case you didn’t see the announcements in our active Facebook group, we have a new Burnt Oranges Board of Directors. You’ll notice there’s a lot of overlap between our community and Love Burn, which we, well, love!
Chair: Maiah Duckstein Vice Chair: Cat Lafuente Treasurer: Adriene Darby Secretary: Josue Garcia Board Member At-Large: Karloz Torres Board Member At-Large: Patrick Webb
You can email the board here. Our goal is to be as communicative and transparent as possible; we’re here for you, after all!
Strategy and Changes for AfterBurn 2024 The Board of Directors has held several meetings this year, during which they identified new goals for both the organization in general and its events. As this pertains to AfterBurn, they have ideas for growing the event in a constructive and sustainable way.
While Love Burn has become the largest regional in the country (and we love to see it), it’s a world-famous destination burn. AfterBurn is the Florida OG, however, comprised of a community of Florida-based burners. Though in recent years, we’ve become known as the “retirement burn,” we’re so much more than that — and we’re ready to prove it. While that ethos has served its purpose in many ways, on (mostly) the other side of the pandemic, the board feels that AfterBurn can evolve and spread its wings.
To that end, in addition to increasing the amount of art grants awarded, the board voted to raise the event capacity to 500 participants. Word on the street is that the community would like to see more folks show up, and the board couldn’t agree more!
In order to keep venue costs down, the board made a unanimous decision to reduce the amount of cabins available at AfterBurn; only folks with ADA needs and Sanctuary will have access. But that’s okay — we’re all burners, and radical self-reliance is something we’re good at. They want to see your faces out in the camps interacting and having fun, not hunkered down indoors.
Let’s work together to make this AfterBurn one for the record books!
Thanks as always for reading,
Bob
