What makes a Burn community feel like a Burn community?
It’s the art and the costumes, the camps and the late-night conversations. It’s the things people build simply because they can imagine them. It’s the stranger who becomes a friend, the unexpected invitation, the person who notices you need a hand and offers one.
But underneath all of that is something less visible and just as important: the way we choose to show up for one another.
The principles give us a shared language for that. They help shape the culture we create together and offer a framework for thinking about what it means to participate in a temporary community like Afterburn.
On August 21, we’re kicking off The Afterburn Principle Project, an 11-week exploration of those principles—and we’re putting a ticket to Afterburn on the line along the way.
Each Friday, we’ll introduce a new principle and a question inspired by it. Your job isn’t to recite a definition or give us the answer you think we’re looking for. We want to know what the principle means to you.
Tell us a story. Share something you’ve learned. Make us laugh. Get philosophical. Give us your weirdest idea. Talk about a time you showed up for someone else, or a time someone showed up for you. Tell us how you see yourself putting these ideas into practice at Afterburn.
There are no essays required and no secret right answers. We’re interested in the people behind the principles.
Every Friday, beginning August 21, a new prompt will be released.
You’ll have one week to submit your response, with one entry per person, per week. A winner will be selected at random from eligible entries and announced the following Thursday.
Then we’ll move on to the next principle.
The final prompt will be released October 30, with the final winner announced November 6.
Over the course of the project, we’ll explore Radical Inclusion, Gifting, Decommodification, Radical Self-Reliance, Radical Self-Expression, Communal Effort, Civic Responsibility, Leaving No Trace, Participation, Immediacy, and Consent.
Each week’s winner will receive one ticket to Florida Afterburn 2026: Transcend, happening November 13–15 at Camp La Llanada in Lake Wales, Florida.
And because one of the principles we’ll be exploring is Gifting, we’re making room for a little gifting of our own.
If you already have a ticket, you can give your winning ticket to someone else. In fact, we encourage it.
Maybe you have a friend who’s never experienced Afterburn—or any Burn at all. Maybe there’s someone in your community who would love to come but hasn’t found a way to make it happen. Maybe you simply know someone who could use a weekend of art, connection, creativity, weirdness, and swamp magic.
If you win, the ticket is yours to keep or give.
The Afterburn Principle Project is a ticket giveaway, but we’d like it to be something more than that.
The principles aren’t a checklist for being a “good Burner.” They’re invitations to consider the kind of community we want to create and the part each of us plays in making that community possible.
Afterburn doesn’t happen independently of the people who attend it. The art gets made by people. Camps get built by people. Meals get shared by people. The spaces get cared for by people. The invitations get extended by people. The moments that stay with us long after the weekend ends happen because people choose to participate in creating them.
So for eleven weeks, we’re asking a simple question in eleven different ways:
What does this look like through your eyes?
Maybe you’ll win a ticket. Maybe you’ll discover something about yourself. Maybe you’ll read someone else’s answer and see the community a little differently.
Hopefully, we’ll get to do all three.
